Description: Opened in 1979, this eatery quickly became an essential part of Austin urban life. The atmosphere is always electric, whether it's noon, midnight or 5am, and everybody of every stripe drops in here sooner or later. Though the service can be uneven, that could be because of the sheer volume of diners served. You'll hardly notice the artwork on the walls for all the people-watching you'll do.

The tasty matzo ball, chicken and noodle soup with potato pancakes is a meal in itself, though you can't go wrong with the large and filling sandwiches: Reuben, corned beef, pastrami and turkey or Philadelphia cheese steak. For breakfast before or after sunup, two eggs with sirloin are a solid choice. Finish it all off with the classic New York-style cheesecake.
